Edward Eugene Whitehead, Sr. was born May 31, 1946, in Canton, Mississippi to the late Eugene and Virginia Whitehead. He was affectionately known by family and close friends as “Poochie.”
Edward accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age. He was baptized and attended Asbury United Methodist Church.
Edward graduated from Rogers High School in 1965. While attending school, he worked various jobs, such as Iupe, Canton Golf Course and Magnavox. He obtained his bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Alcorn A & M College in 1970. While at Alcorn, he played the saxophone with the band. After college, he taught elementary education in the Canton Public School District. He also worked as a distribution clerk with the Jackson Postal Service, and later became a postal carrier in Canton, MS. He was a member of the Jackson Urban League, Mississippi Teachers Association, and the Antique Club of Jackson.
November 28, 1970, Edward married Doris Newman Whitehead.
Edward and his family moved to Fayette, MS where he accepted the job as postmaster. After retiring, he returned to Jackson, MS where he worked at Nissan in Canton, MS. Out of all the opportunities he experienced, his greatest joy was working for his son at Whitehead Funeral Services in Carthage, MS.
In 2021, his health began to fail. He kept the faith until his earthly journey ended.
Edward will forever remain in the hearts and minds of his family for the love he shared and the laughter he brought to everyone that knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories; wife of 52 years Doris Whitehead, 3 children; Jacqueline Whitehead of Houston, TX, Edward (Jessica) Whitehead, II. of Brandon, MS, and Brooke Whitehead of Houston, TX. One brother, Sylvester (Tuwaine) Whitehead of Canton, MS. One sister, Alice (Melvin) Hawkins of Allen, TX.
4 grandchildren, Leah Harris, Nicholas Whitehead, Jacob Whitehead and Erial Whitehead; Mother-in-law, Patty Reese; sisters-in-law, Violet Green, Elizabeth Newman, and Deloris Newman; brothers-in-law, Charles Newman, Earnest Newman and Frank Green; a very special cousin Lawrence (Brewster) Jones. A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
