Today, we commemorate the life and enduring impact of Mrs. Mildred Jean Morris Johnson. Born on July 6, 1950, in Carthage, Mississippi, Mildred was the daughter of the late Bennie James Morris, Sr., and Augustine Morgan Morris Smith. She pursued her education at O. E. Jordan High School, Coahoma Community College, and Mississippi Valley State University, all located in the state of Mississippi. Mildred was an active member of the Tribulation Missionary Baptist Church in Carthage, MS, where she sang in the choir and participated in oratorial contests during her formative years. A skilled cook and baker, Mildred was particularly renowned for her delectable pound cakes.
Mildred passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Baptist Leake Hospital. Throughout her life, she was recognized for her compassionate heart and endearing spirit, which endeared her to everyone she encountered. Dedicated to her family, church, classmates, and various organizations, Mildred served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, President of the Tribulation Missionary Society, Assistant Secretary for the Women's Mount Hope Baptist Association, and Treasurer for the Carthage Court 399 Heroine of Jericho. As a devoted educator with the Durant Public Schools, Mildred embodied a life of purpose.
Mildred was married in holy matrimony to the late Alex Johnson, with whom she had a loving family, including Amy (Yo-Yo) Mariontine, Jessica, Curtis, Vicky, Brenda, Jeffrey, and Patricia. Her beloved granddaughter, Madison Nicole, held a special place in her heart, and she affectionately loved and adored her other grandchildren.
As a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Mildred's family was deeply devoted to her.
Mildred leaves behind a legacy of love and memories to be cherished by her sisters, Margaret Smith and Dr. Phyllis Kibler Marshall, both of Carthage, MS, and Elaine Thomas of Jackson, MS; brothers, Hulon Smith of Waynesboro, MO, Dale Smith of Milwaukee, WI, and Calvin Morris of Carthage, MS; her cherished son/nephew, Ronnie Morris, and his wife, Jolena; special sister, Mary Ann Latiker; in-laws, Rev. Percy Honeysucker, Calvin Gray, and Christopher Marshall, Robert Branson; aunts, Winnie Milsaps and Verline Gaines of Chicago, IL, and Betty Morgan of Milwaukee, WI; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Branson and brothers, Bennie Morris and Allen Smith. May the remarkable life and legacy of Mildred Jean Morris Johnson continue to inspire and uplift all who knew and loved her.
