Regina Gates, affectionately known as "Big Turk" passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Regina was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was known for her infectious humor and her kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.
In 1973, she graduated from Edinburg High School and then attended Mississippi Valley State University where she majored in Early Childhood Education. She later went on to pursue a career in beauty and cosmetology. Her dedication and hard work were evident in everything she did, and she was admired by colleagues and clients alike.
Family was the cornerstone of Regina's life, and she cherished spending time with her loved ones. To honor her memory, she leaves behind her children; Tameka (Larry) Weathers, Tamrya (Rickey) Lockhart, Katerica (Kenny) Banks, and Dr. Candance Gates. Eight grandchildren; Kobe Gates, Jabarie Weathers, Jamarie Weathers, Krissa Gates, Janiya Bronson, Kiarra and Khristian Gates-Anderson and Kaiden Hilliard. A great-grandson Kason Weathers; special nephews Adarryl (Elexandra) Gates and Darryl Leflore, and a special niece Tiffany Payne.
In addition to her immediate family, she also leaves siblings; Dr. Dorothy Leflore, Robert (Debbie) Dodd, Vernell (Charlette) Griffin, Rufus (Peggy) Gates, Jr., Ronnie Gates, and Ya-Ya. Sisters; Constance (Houston) Ealy, Teresa (Ben) Alexander, and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
Regina was preceded in death by her parents; Johnny Rufus and Christine Townsend Gates. Her sisters; Lana Hollistine Harris and Gladys Ruth Watson. Her brother; Steven Gates, and her most precious daughter, Nina Gates Burnside.
Regina's passing leaves a void the lives of all who knew her, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be remembered for her countless punchlines, her legacy of love, and kindness.
